5 SIMPLE IDEAS TO ADD MORE SELF-CARE TO YOUR LIFE

March 17, 2023

5 أفكار بسيطة لإضافة المزيد من وقت العناية بالذات في يومك

Most of us know that self-care is good for us. The tricky part? In the moments when we need to practice self-care the most, it’s often the last thing on our minds.

For years, the idea of self-care seemed indulgent…associated with expensive spa treatments and yoga retreats, spending excess cash, and flaunting a lifestyle. Thankfully, times have changed. People have found that slowing down and taking care of themselves – making time to relax, pamper, and treat themselves well – has become not just a coping mechanism but a necessity.

That said, while practicing self-care is clearly important, it often falls by the wayside in our busy day-to-day lives. These easy self-care ideas can help you prioritize yourself, improve well-being, and lower stress…without feeling like a chore.

1.Get Back to Basics

It may seem silly to ask, but are your basic needs being met? What seems so obvious – sleeping, eating well, drinking enough water – are often the tasks we sacrifice when time crunched.
Be honest: How well are you treating yourself? Getting the basics in order is the first step in self-care and is the easiest to accomplish. Set your phone to “Do Not Disturb” and limit screen time before bed. Get the full eight hours. Keep an extra-large water bottle on your desk as reminder to hydrate throughout the day. Try meal prepping or a meal subscription service to have nutritious food ready when you are.

2.Journal for Gratitude

One way to ease yourself into a more grateful headspace is with a gratitude journal. It's a quick activity you can do throughout the day that puts your life into perspective. It doesn’t have to be an epic tale… something as simple as a delicious glass of wine or a beautiful sunset. Little gratitudes add up.

3.Schedule Time for Yourself

Adding another event to your calendar may seem counterintuitive, but it’s important. Put self-care time in your planner and don’t cancel it. Whether it’s a coffee date with a friend, a workout class, or even a 10-minute walk around the block during your workday, blocking out time for an activity that renews you will ensure that it actually gets done. Plus, seeing the appointment on your calendar will give you the opportunity to look forward to it.

4.Elevate Your Day-to-Day

No additional bandwidth in your schedule? Instead of trying to find time for new activities, make your existing daily rituals more satisfying. Use a real plate and silverware for your work lunch, rather than eating from a takeout box. Transform your morning shower into a sensorial experience with a luxurious shampoo and conditioner, or aromatherapy from a eucalyptus branch hung from your showerhead. Give your beauty routine a luxe overhaul. If you find yourself in line or a waiting room, spend those minutes listening to an energizing playlist rather than scrolling through depressing headlines.

5.Make It a Group Effort

Self-care doesn’t have to be a solo activity. Enjoy caring for yourself with a partner, family member, or friend. Cook dinner together, have dance parties, work out with each other, try out face masks and spa treatments, or practice a new hobby.

THE BENEFITS OF MAKING SELF-CARE A PRIORITY

With these easy ideas, self-care doesn’t have to be overly time-consuming or expensive. Need another reason to prioritize taking care of you? Here are five good ones:

  1. Self-care improves your physical health. Eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly can improve your energy levels and lower your risk of illness.
  2. Self-care helps reduce stress. Relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing can help promote feelings of calm.
  3. Self-care improves your mental health. Engaging in activities that bring you joy can improve your mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  4. Self-care improves overall well-being. Practicing self-care can help you feel more in control of your life, boost self-esteem and self-confidence, and promote a sense of personal fulfillment.
  5. Self-care improves your relationships. When you take care of yourself, you’ll be better equipped to take care of others and be present for them.
